Minamiboso Tourist Information - Flower Picking (January, 30, 2013 UP)

Minamiboso City, located in the south of Chiba Prefecture, greets spring ahead of other parts of the region because of its mild climate. Varieties of flowers will be at their best from January on, blazoning the area with flower fields as far as the eye could reach.

Shiramazu Flower Fields (Minamiboso City)

Nanaura Area, consisting of Shiramazu, Ohkawa, Senda and Hiraiso, is a land of everlasting spring without frost falling even in the depth of winter, thanks to the Kuroshio Current (or Japan Current) that runs along the peninsula. Vast flower fields are extending on both sides of the road (on the mountain and ocean sides). You can enjoy a really breathtaking carpet of flowers.

* Main season: Until late March

* Flowers: Stock, Poppy, Common Marigold, Rape Blossoms, Marigold, Snapdragon, Cornflower, Venidium, etc.

* Locations: Shiramazu, Ohkawa, Senda, Hiraiso and Kawaguchi (Chikura, Minamiboso)

* Access by Public Transport:

  • (1) Approx. 2 hrs. and 30 min. from JR Tokyo Station by highway express bus to Chikura Station on the JR Uchibo Line
  • (2) Take a JR bus for Awa Shirahama from Chikura Station (JR Uchibo Line). Get off the bus at Shiramazu Ohana-batake Stop. A one-minute walk from the bus stop.

Flower Fields in Hanazono Area (Minamiboso City)

A yellow carpet of rape blossoms extends all over Wadaura. In this area you can enjoy blooming of common marigolds, cornflowers, carnations, stocks, iridis, and various other kinds of flowers throughout the year.

* Main season: Until late May

* Flowers: Poppy, Snapdragon, Common Marigold, Rape Blossoms, Carnation, Statice, etc.

* Location: Hanazono Area, Wadacho, Minamiboso

* Access by Public Transport:

  • (1) Approx. 2 hrs. from JR Tokyo Station by highway express bus to JR Awa Kamogawa Station
  • (2) 15 min. by train from Awa Kamogawa Station to Wada Station on the JR Uchibo Line
  • (3) Approx. 25-minute walk from Wadaura Station on the JR Uchibo Line

Sightseeing Spots in Minamiboso Nambo Paradise (Tateyama City)

The whole place of the extensive Nambo Paradise is alive with a large number of species of flowering plants from the Subtropical and Torrid Zones. 

It has a 300-meter long continuous greenhouse, one of the largest ones in the country, with a rich variety of tropical birds. You can touch animals, and in the butterfly museum you will be amazed with butterflies from Okinawa and other subtropical areas of Japan freely flying around.

  • (1) Approx. 2 hrs. from JR Tokyo Station by highway express bus to Tateyama Station on the JR Uchibo Line
  • (2) 15 min. by taxi from Tateyama Station on the JR Uchibo Line
