Sawara’s Historical District
(佐原の歴史的町並み)

Sawara once prospered during the Edo period by using water transportation. People took the culture of Edo, adapting it into their own unique culture. The city worked to preserve this historical spectacle and in December 1996, this district became the first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Kanto. Many of the shops here have succeeded the family business for generations since the Edo period and still continue the business to this day.
