Sawara Machinami

The Sawara “Machinami” (machinami meaning townscape) is how locals refer to the historical Sawara District. The town was once an important commercial hub, and has maintained its centuries old aesthetic, earning the name “Little Edo” in reference to town's heyday during the Edo Period. Streets lined with well-preserved historic buildings follow the district's Onogawa River, a former transport route to Edo. Sawara was selected as the first “Important Traditional Architecture Conservation Area” in the Kanto district.

English information and rental bikes are available at the Sawara Machinami Kouryuukan (Information Center). Sawara Station is only a 30-minute ride from Narita Station on the JR Narita Line.
